It is never too late for people to stop smoking -- even when they
have lung cancer, according to a new study. People diagnosed with
early stage lung cancer can double their chances of survival over
five years if they stop smoking, compared with those who continue
to light up.
This is the first review of studies to measure the effects of
continued smoking after diagnosis of lung cancer and suggests
that it may be worthwhile to offer smoking cessation treatment to
patients with early stage lung cancer.
Around 1,863 Irish people are diagnosed with lung cancer
annually and it is responsible for up to 1,642 deaths. . . .
The Irish Cancer Society said that while smoking and lung cancer
are more prevalent in men than women, "the trends in the both
sexes are very different".
Lung cancer incidence in Irish men is falling annually and is
now below the EU average. But for women it is on the increase and
is double the EU average.
